Furniture Sliders - Synopsis

Furniture Sliders is the first book of the Bureau Archives series - a gripping, high-stakes spy-fi thriller set in 1947, where the shadow of World War II still looms, and the secrets of time manipulation threaten to change the world.  The story follows Max Calder, a former intelligence agent who is pulled back into the world of espionage when he is unexpectedly visited by Alicia Rayes, a former operative code name Artemis.

The novel begins in New York, where Max Calder has been living quietly after the war.  Though he once played a pivotal role in covert operations, Calder is now trying to distance himself from his past.  That is, until Artemis appears, bringing him a message that will upend his life.  Rayes reveals that the Mirror, a mysterious, time-altering device, has resurfaced.  Calder, who had once encountered the Mirror's power, learns that the device has now fallen into the hands of dangerous people.  Its power could reshape reality and alter history to its owner's advantage.

Rayes urgently needs Calder's help to find and neutralize it.  Together, they begin a tense and perilous journey across cities in Europe and South America.  Along the way, they encounter a maze of intelligence agents, double-crossing operatives, and those willing to manipulate time itself for personal gain.  Their search takes them to Vienna, where Calder's memories of his past involvement with the Mirror are triggered.  Vienna is a hotbed of espionage and political intrigue.  Calder and Rayes uncover clues that point to Dr. Emil Krane working to weaponize the Mirror.  Calder must face the ghosts of his own past, as he discovers his own role in the creation and concealment of the Mirror - memories that had been erased or distorted by the very device he sought to protect.

From Vienna, the trail leads them to Prague after a betrayal, a city still recovering from the effects of war and under the looming threat of Communist control.  As they delve deeper into the city's underbelly, they find themselves facing powerful enemies who will stop at nothing to claim the Mirror and its destructive power.

The final leg takes them to Montevideo, Uruguay, a city with a growing undercurrent of nefarious activity tied to the global struggle for power.  And then on through Argentina to the foothills of the Andes via Mendoza.  Calder and Rayes face a shadowy organization bent on using the Mirror to rewrite history.  As they race against time, Calder must confront not only external threats but the internal struggle of whether to use the Mirror's power for good or to destroy it once and for all to prevent catastrophic consequences.

Throughout the novel, Calder's fragmented memories resurface, revealing unsettling truths about his own involvement in the creation of the Mirror.  The novel builds to a tense climactic confrontation where Calder and Rayes must make an impossible choice: to control the Mirror's power or destroy it, knowing that either decision could have world-altering consequences.

Furniture Sliders is a taut, intelligent narrative blending classic spy thriller elements with speculative science fiction written in first-person noir style.  With its themes of identity, memory, and the moral consequences of tampering with time, the novel explores the delicate balance between freedom and control.  As Calder and Rayes race to stop the misuse of a power that could rewrite history, they must grapple with their own past and the ethical dilemmas surrounding the manipulation of time itself.
